Authorial book

Design and concept: Štěpánka Bláhovcová
Sizes: 156 mm . 128 mm
Realised: 2005

This authorial book is formed from printed papers collected during three months of my life in Ústí nad Labem. Daily newspapers, advetisments, election campaigns, townhall news and the magazine Probuďte se! (Wake up!).

The book is a reflection of the city:
Briefly, Ústí nad Labem is a city of deep historical roots and great history (interwoven with a neverending process of demolition and building either due to natural disasters or wars), a city on the crossroad between Prague and Dresden in a beautiful landscape of the hilly landscape of the Czech Středohoří and the Danube sandstones. It was stigmatised by the displacement of a majority of the original population after 1945, it was bombarded by the Americans and the destruction was completed by the communists, a city without a centre, composed of villages of various sizes, after the Velvet Revolution dubbed as the Clondike City, a city of underhand moneychangers and drug addicts, a city suffering from racial and social problems, chemical industry, a bad media image, its original culture and effort to attain better life standard.

And that is why: traditional and well-done binding combines in itself various incongruous factors, which are united by coincidence in one book. It is daily newspapers, all kinds of brochures and three authorial cartoons of my own with Ústí topics. The binding is hard, but not finished and, moreover, the cover is missing, so that the pile of fragile newsprint is not protected at all and is liable to damage even if treated carefully. The book pile is carefully cut on two sides (even the cutting is not completed!). We can see all the layers in the cut. When quickly leafing through the pages, news, which were of highest importance only recently, now merge together into meaningless headlines.
